Sexual dysfunction, which is often known as sexual malfunction, is a medical term used to describe an individual who lacks sexual desire. Herbs for Anxiety

One of the oldest known treatment methods for anxiety is the use of medicinal herbs. Medicinal herbs have been used for hundreds, possibly even thousands of years, to help with anxiety problems. Some of the more popular herbs that are used for this condition include Kava, St. John's Wort and Valerian.

Although these herbs can be very effective in helping to treat anxiety, they should never be used to replace any prescription drugs by those that suffer from severe anxiety. Stress and Insomnia Herbal Remedies

Stress is a common problem today and it leads to a number of other problems, including insomnia. A class of herbs called nervines or calmatives have been used for many years to calm the nerves, promote sleep which can reduce stress and insomnia. Following are some examples of herbal calmatives that can reduce stress and induce a night of peaceful sleep.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita): This is one of the most well-known and popular calmatives. It is a gentle herb with small flowers like daisies. These flowers are dried and made into tea to calm the nerves and help those who drink it sleep. It can even be used to help with digestive difficulties.

Hops (Humulus lupulus): This is a very powerful herbal sedative. Hops can be used by those having trouble sleeping, or simply by anyone suffering general anxiety. A combination of hops, passion flower, and valerian, made into a tea or tincture taken half an hour before bed can promote a restful night.

Kava Kava (Piper methysticum): Kava is good when taken just right before bed if it used for insomnia, or during the day to help with stress and anxiety. It is also an analgesic and can soothe menstrual cramps and muscle aches. Never use kava with alcohol or prescription drugs, especially calmatives, as the herb can intensify the effect of these drugs.

Lavender (Lavandula officinalis or Lavandula angustifolia): The scent alone had a calmative effect. Just inhaling lavender can bring a feeling of calm. The dried flowers can also be used in herbal tea blends. Try adding a few drops of lavender essential oil to a hot bath for a relaxing experience.

Lemon Balm (Melissa offcinalis): This is a member of the mint family, which means it has a lovely scent. Tea made from the leaves of lemon balm will relax the drinker. It can also help with indigestion.

Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata): The purple flowers of this vine are often found in gardens. Passion flowers can also be used for sedative purposes. It can be brewed as tea to alleviate restlessness and agitation, as well as relief from cramps and muscle twitches. Combined with valerian and taken as a tincture before bedtime, it can combat insomnia as well.

Skullcap (Scultellaria lateriflora): The flowers of this plant are skull-shaped, hence the name. This is an excellent general calmative that affects the whole nervous system. Tea made from a combination of skullcap and lavender can be used to reduce anxiety and nervous tension.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis): Valerian root is a powerful sedative that can be used as a sleep aid as well as a remedy to reduce muscle spasms. This herb is usually made into a tincture, sometimes along with hops and passion flower. It is a powerful sedative, which means it should not be used with prescription drugs that treat insomnia or anxiety.

The active components of herbs can be very potent and can interact with any medication you can be currently taking. Always consult your doctor or other health care professional before taking an herbal remedy to prevent any adverse reactions. Pregnant or nursing women should also avoid herbal remedies.

Relaxing Smoking Herbal Blend

I'm new to all of this and I have a few questions about the legal "weed". On the little jars it says it contains mullein leaf and damiana leaf. My friend smokes 3-5g of that stuff daily, and I'm wondering if my own herbal mixture can get him the same effect.

I know there is no way that only mullein and damiana gets you the high he describes. So I was thinking, if I combine 1/4 part mullein (as a base), 1/4 part damian (calming effect), 1/4 part skullcap (more calming), 1/8 part calamus root (fake munchies) and 1/8 part osha root (taste).

Does this sound like an ok recipe? I'm no herbal expert, I just looked around the web. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

In Australia there is an organization known as the Therapeutic Goods Administration. They are the overseer to all herbal mixes sold in Australia. To have therapeutic goods to sell they need to undergo testing to prove their efficacy. That is, to prove they do what you are claiming. This can be circumvented by only displaying the item as food quality (as opposed to therapeutic quality) and saying the contents "may" do this or "could assist" with that. Hope this helps for wherever you are :)

The Currant situation with Herbal Medicine in this country and many other in this crazy western world is totally nuts in my opinion -I have just spent a while reading around the legal bla and what strikes me most is the joke stated everywhere that legislation and licensing regulations is all about protecting the public -protecting the public from what????

They say dangerous herbalists and dangerous herbs hehehe is what I say so I am definitely one of these dangerous herbalists who will not cow down to their bullshit oh and so is Fi and in fact a few others.....

We say educate yourselves, empower yourselves -to at least recognize the plants in your local area -your gardens, parks and wild spaces -post us your pics of plants you don't know or ones you know and want to learn about.

Making simply home remedies and potions in the way to heal your selves and your families - stay away from the pharmaceuticals if you can they are disgusting polluting our whole planet with numerous poisons, polluting our children, most kids have had at least 6 course of antibiotics before they are 3 yrs old what is wrong with garlic???? and loads of vaccines, old peoples -my granddad is on 8 different medications yuk

I see so many patients who are totally imbalanced because of the doctor drugs -numerous ailments are treated with drugs who's side effects mimic symptoms of the ailment they are treating???? So get them detoxing herbs that are prolific everywhere ie nettles, dandelions, red clover, cleavers, chickweed, dock and dry em put em in jars n drink them in place of fancy herbal teas bought in supermarkets....don't get me started on them!

Hi Everyone, I have some great herbs for sale!!

I have been interested in herbalism for years. I was infertile for many years but couldn't face IVF treatment. I spent a long time working on detoxing as I thought that would help and after many non-successes found a really good way to increase fertility. I have had 2 children now.
Since then I have used herbs for the whole family including the cats and have managed to avoid most ill health and most drugs.

I am now moving to another country with an aim to start my own holistic centre for yoga, reiki, and herbalism. Although I have used herbs for ages I am unqualified and want to do some kind of diploma to ratify and consolidate my current knowledge.

I have a lot of herbs which I am unable to take with me so I wanted to offer them to like minded amateurs or therapists.

They are all Baldwins herbs, bought within the last 12 months and kept in a cool dark cupboard and I am looking to pass them on at about 60% of their current cost.

Tired of Being Tired

I am 43 and still having regular periods but I do have some symptoms of menopause coming in the near future. I am very in tune with my body. I have a fair amount of knowledge of herbal remedies and vitamins. I will start taking an herb for whatever symptom I am having concerning PMS and within a few weeks it quits working or it makes me feel very agitated. The last few months I have been feeling very tired about a week or a little more before my period. I have tried vit B complex but after a day or so, I'm feeling "MOODY". Recently I've tried Astragalus root, which helped for the first month now it makes me feel too mellow and tired. Gingseng, Gingeroot, Spirunela, Wheatgrass ect... all add to moodiness. I'm fine with more than enough energy for the first three weeks after my period.
This seems very odd, but in the winter months I have almost too much energy but when spring comes, this is what I deal with. I am open to suggestions but not looking to get into a lot of money.

Herbal Skin Care

We all know the health benefits that many herbs can offer, but did you also know that you can use herbs to maintain healthy skin as well? Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and you need to keep it as healthy as the rest of your body.

When we think about using herbs for skin care, probably the first thing that comes to mind is putting lavender or chamomile in the bathtub for smooth skin and a soothing scent. But there are many other ways herbs can be used to give you healthy, glowing skin.

Tips for Using Herbs for Skin Care

You can use various herbs for a number of skin conditions, or just to make it feel soft and smooth. Here are a few tips for healthy skin from head to toe:Nourish your skin, and purify your blood, with yellowdock root. It is rich in iron, and in addition to being good for your skin, it is also beneficial for your gallbladder and liver.

Treat your skin to a calm, soothing sensation by using a balm made with peppermint essential oil.

Nourish your skin with fenugreek, which has loads of nutrients and helps dissolve fat. Other skin-nourishing herbs include chamomile, oat straw, horsetail, thyme and burdock root.

Mist your skin with lavender water throughout the day to help get rid of oily skin. Witch hazel is also used to absorb oil in the skin. There are a number of essential oils you can use to combat oily skin as well, including bergamot, juniper, sage, lemon, frankincense and cedarwood.

Herbal Facial Masks

Facial masks work great for getting rid of oils and dirt on the skin. Many cosmetics and skin care companies offer a variety of herbal facial masks, but these can be quite costly. Or you can have an expensive facial at a spa.

If you want to save money, and enjoy your facial in the comfort of your own home, you can easily make your own facial masks. All you need are some herbs and a few ingredients you probably already have.

By combining 1/4 teaspoon of dried herbs (your choice, depending on the type of mask you want), a mild facial cleanser (Aveeno works well for this), 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of powdered milk and 1 egg white, you can have an effective facial mask. Because you are using herbs, you can also use this as an impromptu aromatherapy session.

Take the combined ingredients, and mix them well in a blender or with a wire whisk, until you have a creamy mixture. Make sure that you thoroughly wash your face and throat, and apply the mask. Sit back and relax...watch TV, read a magazine...for about 15 minutes, and wash the mask off with warm water.

For an even more thorough facial, after washing your face, steam your skin for a few minutes before applying your mask. You can do this by filling your sink with hot water, placing a towel over your head, and holding your head over the sink, making sure the towel covers both your head and the sink to hold the steam in.

Yarrow - an Herbal Remedy for Colds, Flu and Fever

The healing properties of the herb yarrow are many. One of the ailments in which yarrow works the best is with a cold or flu. Taking it internally causes the body to perspire and that is what brings a fever down to normal. Yarrow has antibiotic and analgesic properties and some people swear using it during a cold or flu makes it go away much faster.

Warning

Pregnant women should avoid yarrow as it is used to promote menstrual flow and can cause a miscarriage. Anyone allergic to aspirin may find they will have a reaction to yarrow. Extensive use of yarrow can cause photo sensitivity. White or wild yarrow is the best to use medicinally because the properties are stronger than the yellow, pink or red varieties. If the colored varieties are the only ones available it is worth a try.

Yarrow Tea

Yarrow tea will help to open sinuses and calm a sore throat. Drink a cup slowly while it is hot. An adult can drink 3 cups a day.

Ingredients:

6 cups water3 Tablespoons1 teaspoon honey per cup1 slice lemon per cup

Directions:

Boil water in a tea kettle. Place yarrow in a tea ball and place it in a china or porcelain teapot.Add the water, cover the top and let it steep 5 to 10 minutes.Remove the tea ball and pour the tea into a cup.Add honey and slice of lemon if desired.Chicken Soup with a Twist

Chicken soup often is used to ease symptoms of a cold but when yarrow is added it gives an extra benefit.

Saute for 2 to 3 minutes.Add carrots and celery and sauté about 6 to 8 minutes more.Place water in a large soup pot.Add the vegetables in the frying pan, herbs, chicken, salt and pepper.Bring to a boil and turn down to simmer for 3 hours skimming every half hour to remove fat that rises to the surface.Discard bay leaf and remove the skin and bones from the chicken and shred the meat if necessary.If desired the vegetables can be mashed or just leaves them whole.Return the broth, chicken and vegetables back to the soup pot.Heat and add any necessary seasoning.Noodles can be added at this time if desired. Serve hot.

The yarrow gives an interesting flavor to the soup that is very pleasant and it will help with the symptoms of a cold and flu. Herbal remedies can sometimes provide relief to everyday maladies along with modern day medications.

Quality Organic Herbal Remedies

Quality organic herbs that can be taken with good results are those that have been clinically tested and have shown promise for the conditions they treat. Herbal remedies do have the same allergy warnings as prescription medications and they have a risk of potential side effects. Fenugreek has the potential side effects of diarrhea, bleeding, bruising, gas, skin sensitivity, low blood sugar, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is an herbal treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH. BPH is another term for an enlarged prostate. In clinical testing, according to MedlinePlus, the effectiveness of saw palmetto is similar to finasteride, the medicine in Proscar, with a lesser amount of potential side effects. Potential side effects of saw palmetto do include headache, dizziness, insomnia, depression, muscle pain, chest pain, high blood pressure and breathing difficulties.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a calming herb that is used in anxiety and insomnia treatments. This herbal remedy helps reduce stress and is often found combined with other herbs like chamomile and valerian. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, it shows promise in calming anxiety symptoms and promoting sleep. Although generally considered a very safe herb, it may interact with some thyroid medications and sedatives. Always ask your doctor before adding any herbal remedy to your treatment program.

Herbal remedies have been going through laboratory testing and clinical trials to test their effectiveness. Some have proven themselves promising while others have shown no help at all with the conditions they have been marketed to treat.
