Herbs for Liver Disease

Liver disease is a general medical term used to cover all of the diseases the affect the liver. Although liver disease can drastically differ in severity and treatment, there are some ways to help with the symptoms of liver disease, and to help the condition itself. A simple remedy that can be used is herbs, such as licorice, chamomile and milk thistle.

Licorice and Chamomile for Liver Disease

Licorice has strong antiviral properties, and can improve immune function. Many medical professionals and natural doctors suggest licorice to those that have been diagnosed with hepatitis B or hepatitis C. Licorice contains a substance known as glycyrrhizin which has severe side effects, so it's important to never take licorice for more than six weeks. Licorice can also be found in a processed form known as DGL licorice, where this substance has been removed, but this does not seem to have the same effects with liver health.

Chamomile has been used for many years in Europe to help with diseases that affect the liver. Medical researchers believe that chamomile works by helping with the regeneration process of the liver and its cells. Some medical professionals even claim that chamomile is able to improve the livers condition in only two weeks time.

Milk Thistle for Liver Disease

Milk thistle contains silymarin, which works to protect the liver cells from toxins. It also helps with the production of protein which help with regeneration of cells in the liver. Milk thistle also can help with inflammation and work to improve general liver function. Many medical professionals suggest taking milk thistle to those with different types of liver disease, and has been used in Europe for diseases of the liver for many years as well.

Although these herbs can be very beneficial in helping to improve liver disease and its symptoms, they should never be used to replace anything that has been prescribed by a doctor. They also should not be used to replace anything that has been suggested by a medical professional.
