Yarrow - an Herbal Remedy for Colds, Flu and Fever

The healing properties of the herb yarrow are many. One of the ailments in which yarrow works the best is with a cold or flu. Taking it internally causes the body to perspire and that is what brings a fever down to normal. Yarrow has antibiotic and analgesic properties and some people swear using it during a cold or flu makes it go away much faster.

Warning

Pregnant women should avoid yarrow as it is used to promote menstrual flow and can cause a miscarriage. Anyone allergic to aspirin may find they will have a reaction to yarrow. Extensive use of yarrow can cause photo sensitivity. White or wild yarrow is the best to use medicinally because the properties are stronger than the yellow, pink or red varieties. If the colored varieties are the only ones available it is worth a try.

Quality Organic Herbal Remedies

Quality organic herbs that can be taken with good results are those that have been clinically tested and have shown promise for the conditions they treat. Herbal remedies do have the same allergy warnings as prescription medications and they have a risk of potential side effects. Before beginning any herbal treatment plan, check with a health care professional.

Echinacea

Echinacea is in many cold and flu herbal remedies touting its use for prevention and treatment. While it gets mixed reviews from clinical trials for its symptom relief, it does seem to lessen the length of the cold, according to the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Echinacea can also be used for an immune system boost and for antibacterial purposes. Potential side effects include dizziness, nausea, constipation, headache, dermatitis, and mild stomach pain as well as possible allergic reactions. This herb should not be taken continuously for longer than a two month period.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is an herbal remedy for the lowering of cholesterol and for lowering blood glucose levels. According to the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, fenugreek may lower these things by the fiber binding with cholesterol and glucose in the body, flushing it away instead of absorbing it. Fenugreek has the potential side effects of diarrhea, bleeding, bruising, gas, skin sensitivity, low blood sugar, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is an herbal treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH. BPH is another term for an enlarged prostate. In clinical testing, according to MedlinePlus, the effectiveness of saw palmetto is similar to finasteride, the medicine in Proscar, with a lesser amount of potential side effects. Potential side effects of saw palmetto do include headache, dizziness, insomnia, depression, muscle pain, chest pain, high blood pressure and breathing difficulties.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a calming herb that is used in anxiety and insomnia treatments. This herbal remedy helps reduce stress and is often found combined with other herbs like chamomile and valerian. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, it shows promise in calming anxiety symptoms and promoting sleep. Although generally considered a very safe herb, it may interact with some thyroid medications and sedatives. Always ask your doctor before adding any herbal remedy to your treatment program.

Herbal remedies have been going through laboratory testing and clinical trials to test their effectiveness. Some have proven themselves promising while others have shown no help at all with the conditions they have been marketed to treat. Always check the background of an herb before starting an herbal remedy and check with your doctor on how it will affect your condition.

Herbal Treatments for Depression

One of the oldest known ways to treat depression is with herbal treatments. Some herbs have been proven throughout the years to help those with depression, and are even safe to be used along with over the counter medication, or prescription drugs. Some of the more effective herbal treatments that can be used include St. John's wort, ginkgo biloba and black hellebore.

St. John's Wort and Ginkgo Biloba for Depression

St. John's Wort has a long history in folk medicine, and has always been used to help with the treatment of depression and anxiety. Even recent medical studies often find this herb can be very beneficial, especially in more mild and moderate cases of depression. Some studies have found that it can be as effective as some of the prescription drugs that are being used for the condition.

Ginkgo biloba is often used to help to improve memory, but it also has been used in folk medicine treatments for depression for many years. St. John's wort is believed to work by helping to improve cerebral circulation, which helps with memory as well as mental health. Ginkgo biloba is especially common for those that have depression that is associated with aging.

Black Hellebore for Depression

Black hellebore, which is also commonly known as Christmas rose, is an herb that is poisonous in large amounts. However, when taken in proper dosages this herbal treatment can help to treat depression. It is often used for those that suffer from long term depression, and is often commonly found in herbal treatments that can be found at herbal shops. It's best to purchase this herb in supplemental form, to ensure that proper dosages are followed.

Although these herbal treatments can be very beneficial to those with depression, they should never be used to replace anything that has been prescribed by a doctor. They also should not be used to replace anything given, or suggested, by a medical professional.

Herbs for Allergies

Allergies occur when the body has an exaggerated reaction to substances that are not harmful. The symptoms of an allergy tend to vary, but some common symptoms include watery eyes, difficulty breathing and itchy eyes. There are many medical treatments used for allergies, but there are also natural medicines that can be used along with conventional medicine. One example is herbs, which have been proven to be very effective for some patients with allergies. These herbs include licorice, plantain and nettle.

Licorice and Plantain for Allergies

Licorice contains a compound that helps to reduce inflammation. This can actually help to counteract many of the symptoms that are associated with allergies. Licorice also contains substances which work to thin the mucus and soothe te respiratory passages, which can reduce irritation that often accompanies allergies and their symptoms. It's best to only take licorice for a total of six weeks at a time, due to symptoms that may occur with long term use. It's also best to avoid taking licorice if you have high blood pressure or are taking any type of blood thinner.

Plantain is an herb, not to be confused with the relative of the banana also known as plantain, that has antispasmodic and anti-catarrhal properties. This means it can help to reduce the severity of symptoms associated with an allergy, and prevent irritation of the mucous membranes. Plantain has been used for many years to treat many respiratory conditions, and can be very beneficial to those that suffer from allergies.

Nettle for Allergies

Nettle is rich in a flavonoid that is known as quercetin, which helps to reduce the production of histamine. This can help to either prevent or reduce many of the symptoms of allergies, including watery eyes, itching, runny nose and nasal congestion. Some medical professionals suggest taking a total of around 500 mg of nettle, three times throughout the day. Nettle is especially helpful for those that have hay fever. Some people may be allergic to nettle, so it's best to check with a medical practitioner beforehand.

Although these herbs can be very beneficial to those with allergies, they should not be used to replace anything that has been prescribed by a doctor. They should also not be used to replace anything that has been suggested by a medical professional.
